The Story, The Inspiration

Skomer Island rises quietly from the waters off the Pembrokeshire coast, one of the most evocative landscapes of South Wales. I wanted to capture not simply the shape of the island, but the extraordinary sense of colour and atmosphere that surrounds it.

In Skomer in Blue, the island appears almost suspended between sea and sky. Layers of turquoise, blue and soft green create a sense of movement across the water, while the coastal vegetation in the foreground brings the viewer into the landscape.

The painting is deliberately loose and expressive, allowing the colours and brushwork to suggest the changing light, wind and atmosphere of the Welsh coast. Skomer becomes less a distant island and more a memory of a place — somewhere experienced through colour, light and the feeling of standing beside the sea.
