Story & Inspiration

There are places that become part of us.

This painting is inspired by Franchard in the Forest of Fontainebleau — a landscape of ancient woodland, sandstone and quiet pools of light that has inspired artists for generations.

I painted this scene as a celebration of the beauty and atmosphere of Franchard: the fading evening light, the reflections across the water and the distant silhouettes of trees. There is a stillness here that feels almost timeless — a moment that could belong to yesterday, or to a memory from many years ago.

Sadly, the landscape I painted has changed profoundly. In the summer of 2026, devastating fires swept through the Fontainebleau massif, affecting around 2,000 hectares of forest. Some areas have been badly damaged and will take many years to recover.

That gives this painting another meaning for me now. It is not simply a painting of a beautiful place; it is a memory of that place.

A moment of evening light, captured before the landscape changed.

  • Poly-cotton blend canvas with a matte/satin finish. Scratch, crack, and warp resistant.
  • Vibrant, long-lasting colors with water-based HP Latex inks and UV protection.
  • Solid wooden frame from renewable sources, 4 cm deep.
