Original Oil Painting on Canvas
20 × 20 cm (7.9 × 7.9 inches)
"Some evenings ask only to be admired. Others stay with us for a lifetime."
Some moments in nature seem almost impossible.
For a few fleeting minutes, the ordinary world falls away as light, colour and atmosphere come together in perfect harmony. They cannot be planned, repeated or held onto. They can only be experienced.
Where the Day Becomes Fire was born from one such evening.
I painted this piece after watching an extraordinary sunset from the bow of the Dutch barge my wife and I called home as we travelled the waterways of France. I stood there in complete silence, captivated as ribbons of crimson, molten orange and luminous gold stretched across the horizon beneath deep violet clouds. The entire sky seemed alive, changing from one heartbeat to the next.
My wife has always smiled at my fascination with the heavens and affectionately calls me "The Sky Man." She's right. Throughout my life, I have found myself looking upwards, waiting for those rare moments when the sky stops being a backdrop and becomes the main event.
This painting is not about recreating a landscape with photographic accuracy. It is about preserving a feeling.
It is the feeling of standing perfectly still while nature quietly reminds us of its power to astonish. It is about wonder, gratitude, and those fleeting moments that become lifelong memories.
Painted entirely in professional artist oils, expressive brushwork and richly layered palette-knife textures allow the surface to catch and reflect light throughout the day. Colours emerge differently as the light changes, giving the painting a quiet sense of movement long after the sun itself has disappeared.
Although intimate in scale, the painting carries a surprising sense of space and atmosphere, inviting the viewer to step beyond the frame and into that unforgettable evening.
Every original I create begins not with a photograph, but with an experience that moved me enough to paint it. My hope is that this piece offers more than something beautiful to look at. I hope it becomes a place to pause—a reminder that life's most extraordinary moments often arrive quietly, asking nothing more of us than to look up.
"I don't paint places simply as they appear. I paint how they felt to stand within them."
