The Sunset We Shared

It was a hot, balmy summer evening. Earlier in the day, people had been swimming in the sea, and as the sun began to fall, many of us simply stayed where we were to watch the light change.

The colours were extraordinary.

The warmth of the evening seemed to remain in the water and on the shore, while the sky began to fill with deep violets, rose, copper, gold and fiery orange. There was a wonderful contrast between the peace of simply sitting and watching and the energy that remained in the sea and the landscape around us.

This small painting grew from that moment.

I wasn’t trying to make a literal record of the sunset. I wanted to capture something of how it felt to be there — the warmth of the evening, the movement of the sea, the extraordinary colour and that shared sense that, for a little while, there was nowhere else anyone needed to be.

Painted in oils on high-quality watercolour paper prepared with gesso, the painting is deliberately intimate in scale. The expressive brushwork and rich layers of colour invite you to look closely and discover the different marks and textures within the surface.

It is part of my Small Paintings Collection — a series of intimate original works created as unique moments rather than editions. Each exists only once.
