Breaking Light – Original Oil Seascape Painting

There are moments at the coast when the sea seems to become almost elemental — when light, water and sky collide in a single, powerful instant.

Breaking Light is an original oil seascape painting capturing a dramatic crashing breaker beneath the warm glow of a setting sun. A vibrant violet and copper sky meets the glowing horizon, while the powerful wave dominates the foreground in a rush of white, blue and cool turquoise.

Painted in heavy impasto oil, the surface has been built up with expressive layers of paint and energetic brushwork. The thickly worked wave gives the painting a strong sense of movement and texture, while the contrasting warm sunset colours create depth and atmosphere.

Rather than simply recording a particular coastal location, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing at the water's edge as a powerful wave breaks in front of you and the evening light transforms the sea.
